We have spoken in the past about the flexibility of thinking as a value that an entrepreneur should develop, in order to have a greater chance of achieving success ( Flexibility, a value for success ). The topic that concerns us today, somehow, integrates elements of these three aspects and constitutes one of the 7 personality dimensions that the EMP Entrepreneurial Mindset Profile measures. .Today we are going to talk about the preference that the entrepreneur has for working in environments and activities with flexible structures, which allow him to develop his creativity, even if he has to collide head-on with ambiguity.

On many occasions, throughout our training and later in our professional life, we have been forced to carry out tasks that require precise compliance with very well-defined and pre-established steps. We have learned to follow instructions to the letter to obtain a result. In school, we were generally taught to follow rules and procedures and rewarded for it.
And this works, in general. When we know the desired result, and there is an established procedure, the easiest and most efficient thing to do is to follow the protocol. Without wasting time or resources, we achieve the result optimally.
However, as entrepreneurs, we do not always have such a clear picture or such established procedures. In fact, I dare say that many of us as entrepreneurs don’t like being forced to follow such rigid instructions. In addition, entrepreneurs often face ambiguous situations and conditions, with great uncertainty. From there derives the preference for flexible structures of the entrepreneur. Unfortunately, at school we were not always taught to deal with ambiguity and the unknown, just as we were taught to follow rules (Although being very honest, thank God today there are more and more educational methodologies that promote independence and creativity from an early age ). When we face uncertainty, it is necessary to develop a high tolerance for ambiguity so that it does not generate an anxiety response but, on the contrary, a behavior open to creativity.
The level at which we feel comfortable, or not, in the face of these ambiguous situations that demand creative and flexible responses, is what constitutes our level of preference for flexible structures,
There are those who feel intimidated by the unknown and anxiety prevents them from designing on their own courses of action that can be successful.
On the contrary, there are others for whom uncertainty represents a challenge and a motivation, an opportunity to push themselves to create.
