Toulmin’s Approach to Addressing Ethical and Moral Issues in Academic Writing


Stephen Toulmin, an English philosopher and logician, developed an approach to address ethical and moral issues in academic writing. His approach, known as the Toulmin Method, is based on the principles of logic and aids in developing arguments that are well-supported and persuasive.


The Toulmin Method begins with the Claim, which is an argument that is supported by evidence. The evidence may include facts, statistics, examples, case studies, and personal experiences. This is followed by the Warrant, which is an explanation of why the evidence provided is valid and relevant to the Claim. This can be done by connecting the Evidence to the Claim through reasoning or logic.


Next, the Backing is used to provide additional evidence or support for the Warrant. This may include additional facts, statistics, and case studies. The Qualifier is then used to limit the strength of the Claim by accounting for exceptions and different perspectives. This helps to make the argument more convincing and comprehensive. 


Finally, the Rebuttal is used to anticipate and respond to possible counterarguments. This may include providing counter-evidence and additional reasoning to support the original argument. This helps to make the argument more compelling and makes it more difficult for opponents to refute the Claim.


The Toulmin Method is an effective way to address ethical and moral issues in academic writing. It provides a structured approach to developing arguments and allows writers to anticipate counterarguments and provide evidence to support their claims.
