public healthcare during a temporary stay in one of the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as those who are insured in that country. This also applies\u00a0to care\u00a0when you have a chronic or long-term illness or if you are pregnant and about to give birth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-paragraph\">The cards are issued by your\u00a0local health authority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-paragraph\"><strong>Important<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the European Health Insurance Card:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ecl-list\">\n<li>is<strong> not an alternative to travel insurance<\/strong>.\u00a0It does not cover any private healthcare or costs such as e.g.\u00a0flight to your home country or lost\/stolen belongings,<\/li>\n<li><strong>does not cover<\/strong>\u00a0your costs if you\u00a0<strong>are traveling for the express purpose of<\/strong>\u00a0receiving\u00a0<strong>medical care<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li><strong>does not guarantee free services<\/strong>.\u00a0As all countries&#8217; health insurance systems differ, services that are free at home may not be free in another country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ecl-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"VIpgJd-yAWNEb-VIpgJd-fmcmS-sn54Q\">Keep in mind<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"VIpgJd-yAWNEb-VIpgJd-fmcmS-sn54Q\">\u00a0that if you\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"VIpgJd-yAWNEb-VIpgJd-fmcmS-sn54Q\">settle<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"VIpgJd-yAWNEb-VIpgJd-fmcmS-sn54Q\">\u00a0in another EU country, you must register using an\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"VIpgJd-yAWNEb-VIpgJd-fmcmS-sn54Q\">S1 certificate<\/span><span class=\"VIpgJd-yAWNEb-VIpgJd-fmcmS-sn54Q\">\u00a0and not use your health insurance card to receive health care in your new country of residence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Health_insurance_for_short_stays\"><\/span><span class=\"\">Health insurance for short stays<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div class=\"banner-box alert\">\n<article id=\"main-article\"><span class=\"\">If you, as an EU citizen, fall ill quickly during a temporary stay in another\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"abbr\" data-label=\"EU27_IS_LI_NO_CH\"><span class=\"\">EU country<\/span><\/a><span class=\"\">\u00a0\u2013 during your holiday, business trip or studies \u2013 you have the right to care that cannot wait until you return home.\u00a0<\/span>You have\u00a0<strong>the same right to care as the residents of the country<\/strong>\u00a0you are visiting.<\/p>\n<p>You must always take your\u00a0European health insurance card (EU card)\u00a0with you when you go abroad.\u00a0It is\u00a0<strong>proof that you are insured<\/strong>\u00a0in an EU country.<\/p>\n<p>If you do not have an EU card or if you cannot use it (for example for private care), you cannot be refused care.\u00a0But you may have to pay on the spot and then\u00a0seek compensation\u00a0after returning home.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Apply_for_a_European_Health_Insurance_Card_EU_Card\"><\/span><a class=\"anchor\" name=\"shortcut-0\"><\/a>Apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EU Card)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In some countries,\u00a0the EU card is on the same card as the national health insurance card.\u00a0In other countries, you must apply for a card.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The card is free<\/strong>.\u00a0You apply to your\u00a0insurance fund\u00a0<strong>before you travel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"warning\">\n<h4 class=\"sr-only\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Warning\"><\/span>Warning<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>There are rogue websites where you can order a European health insurance card for a fee. <strong>Do not use these websites<\/strong>\u00a0but contact your insurance fund\u00a0directly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Also, check with your insurance fund if your health insurance <strong>covers your family members<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about the European health insurance card in different countries:<\/p>\n<div id=\"functional-toggle-1\" class=\"toggle countries functional-toggle\">Select country<\/div>\n<p><em>The European Commission is not responsible for the content of external websites. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/insurancenoon.com\/how-do-i-read-my-blue-cross-blue-shield-insurance-card\/\">How do I read my Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance card?<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Special_cases_and_exceptions\"><\/span><a class=\"anchor\" name=\"shortcut-1\"><\/a>Special cases and exceptions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>You who\u00a0<strong>are not an EU citizen<\/strong> can only use your EU card for healthcare in Denmark, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland if you are a refugee and live in an EU country or are a co-insured relative of an EU citizen.<\/li>\n<li>The card does not give\u00a0<strong>the right to rescue efforts and transport home<\/strong>.\u00a0In order to be transported home if you become seriously ill or have an accident in another EU country, you must have\u00a0<strong>travel insurance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The EU card\u00a0<strong>does not cover private care<\/strong>.\u00a0You can only use it with healthcare\u00a0providers in the public system.<\/li>\n<li>The card\u00a0<strong>also does not apply to planned care in<\/strong>\u00a0another EU country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"example\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Examples_from_real_life\"><\/span>Examples from real life<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Get_travel_insurance\"><\/span>Get travel insurance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Sven from Herrljunga went to France on a skiing trip. Already on the second day, he injured his knee on the ski slope and was rescued by the French rescue service. When he got home, he received an expensive bill.
